이 노랠 처음 들었던 때를 분명히 기억한다.
이름은 잊어버린 학교 앞 “음악다방”이었다. 우리는 ‘프레쉬맨’이었고
통일전선전술에 대해 열심히 설명하길 좋아하던 어떤 친구가 곁에 있었다.
(그 다방은 지금 내가 이 글을 쓰고 있는 곳으로부터 몇백미터 안쪽에 있었다.
그 친구의 집도 비슷하니 가까운 곳에 있었다.)
거기서 우연찮게 두 노랠 들었는데 하나는 “은막의 제왕”이었고
다른 하나는 이 곡이었다. 둘 다 처음 들었고 둘 다 너무 멋졌다.
그리고 오래도록 좋아했었다.

알다시피 그런 말 굳이 필요없지만
그런 말 꺼내야 한다면 이 노래처럼 조금은 서글플지도 모르겠다.

‘TRUE’라는 상표를 새긴 탄환이라도 장전한 것일까.

누군가의 가슴을 향해 날아갔다.

저 혼자 오락가락 했던 때.
(이 곡의 원작자는 deroll adams로 도노반은 그의 노래 몇곡을 리메이크 했으며
데롤 애덤스를 소재로 노래를 부르기도 했다.
잡음 가득한 애덤스의 원곡은 촌스럽고 좀 더 쓸쓸하다.
도노반과 애덤스의 연결은 내가 램블링 잭 엘리엇을 듣게 되는 계기가 되었다.)
